Deep in flashbacks depicting his own downfall, jailed Swedish family man David (director and screenwriter Victor Sjostrom) learns that his younger brother (Einar Axelsson) is also a victim of his misdeeds, in the horror-fantasy based on the novel by Selma Lagerlof, The Phantom Carriage, 1922.
