Cast & Crew
In 19th-century Marseilles, seaman Edmond Dantès is condemned to life imprisonment for conspiring with Bonapartists to return the exiled Napoleon from Elba. This false accusation and unjust sentence are brought about through the maneuvers of Caderousse, a man envious of Dantès' position; Fernand de Mortcerf, who is in love with Dantès' fiancée, Mercedes; and Villefort, an ambitious magistrate who must eliminate Dantès in order to advance his own career. After being imprisoned in the Château d'If for 17 years, Dantès escapes and, with the map of a dead prisoner, recovers a vast treasure buried on the island of Monte Cristo. Returning to Marseilles as the Count of Monte Cristo, he takes revenge on Caderousse, Villefort, and de Mortcerf, who married Mercedes after she became convinced of Dantès' death. Dantès then sails off alone to erase the unhappy memories of his past.
