Tom Fallon and his cohort Matthew Ryder, both crooked livestock brokers, inform Bowie Moore that the cattle he bought from them were stolen. They kill him after he pays his $10,000 debt. Greedy for more money, Ryder and Fallon have a thug trample Moore's neighbor, Bud Ringo, after he refuses to pay the already-paid debt. In California, Bud's brother, famous rodeo star and former sheriff Johnny Ringo, receives news that his brother needs help. He arrives home to find his brother recuperating in bed. So as not to arouse suspicion, Johnny changes his name and behaves like a bumbling fool, unable to keep his seat on a horse, or keep aim with a gun and he is hired as a dishwasher by Ryder and Fallon, who have taken over the ranch. Dorothy Moore, Bowie's daughter, is kept hostage at the ranch after she comes to visit Bud. She is unaware of Johnny's true identity, but he acts as her protector and falls in love with her. Johnny develops a scheme in which he slowly rids the ranch of the ranchhands. Late at night, he tames a bronco and brings coffee to the cowboys tending herd. He then takes them unaware, ropes them and brings them to a neighbor's ranch where they are kept in secret. As more cowboys disappear, Ryder and Fallon grow fearful and plan to sell the cattle and clear out. After the cattle are sold, Ryder and Fallon vie for the money and Fallon is killed. Johnny captures Ryder and all is well after the sheriff arrives. Johnny is delighted to discover that Dorothy is in love with him, and he stays on at the ranch.
