U.S. Marshal Bob "Stormy" Storm and his deputy, Syd "Rawhide" McTavish, who are hoping to catch the rustlers responsible for many cattle thefts in the area, join some cowboys driving a herd that belongs to Laura Barton and her mother. Trail boss Cooper is the only one who knows that Stormy is a marshal. Shortly after they arrive, the rustlers attack, and Cooper is killed. Soon, Joe Turner, a henchman of Matt Haley, the man behind the rustlers, approaches Stormy and informs him that Haley will buy whatever cattle the rustlers have left behind. Stormy and Rawhide ride into town to speak with Haley, but his offer is so low that Stormy turns it down and vows to stay in town until the herd has been recovered. Outside, several cattlemen warn Stormy and Rawhide that after their cattle were stolen, Haley made the same offer, and when they turned it down, the rest of their cattle disappeared. Hager, one of the cattlemen, was killed when he protested to Haley, although Haley insists that he committed suicide. The cattlemen add that the sheriff refuses to take action, claiming that the rustlers work outside his jurisdiction. Stormy then suggests that all the cattlemen band together to patrol the trail and prevent the rustlers from taking more cattle. The strategy works, and Haley realizes that he must get rid of Stormy. When Hager's son Tim arrives in town, Haley blames Stormy for the cattle raids and tells Tim that the loss of his cattle drove Hager to suicide. Later, Rawhide learns from Tim that Haley has hired gunmen to kill Stormy and will pay them with money that is arriving on the next stage. Stormy and Rawhide decide to rob the stage so that the money will not reach Haley. Also on the stage are Tim's fiancée, Laura Barton, and her mother. Stormy gets the money without harming the driver or the passengers and then proceeds to the Hager house to look for a suicide note. There he finds a notebook containing the record Hager kept of Haley's wrongdoings. Tim surprises Stormy at the house and is about to shoot him, when Stormy explains that he is a marshal. After Stormy shows him the notebook, Tim agrees to help bring Haley to justice. After they locate the stolen cattle, Tim, who is late for his wedding to Laura, and Stormy meet the Bartons at their hotel. Mrs. Barton recognizes Stormy as the stagecoach robber and forbids Tim to marry Laura. In an effort to explain, Stormy admits that he held up the stage and is overheard by some of Haley's men. Haley then confronts Stormy at gunpoint and they fight. Haley manages to escape and rides with his men to the canyon where the stolen herds are hidden. Stormy and the other cattlemen close off the entrances to the canyon, trapping Haley's gang inside. After Stormy arrests Haley, Mrs. Barton gives her approval for Tim and Laura's wedding.
