Bud Bryson, a wandering cowhand, is tricked by rustlers into appearing to work for them, and when he is caught by angry cattlemen, they brand him. After escaping he is befriended by Slim Grand, who offers to help him prove his innocence. In the meantime, the sheriff posts a wanted poster for Bud, who is also suspected of shooting a rancher. Slim and Bud suspect John Walker, and they are hired by his daughter Ellen to work on his ranch. Later, Ellen receives a letter saying that her father has been arrested for cattle rustling. Having fallen in love with her, Bud offers to help her find out who is using the Walker brand, with which he was branded. Bill Morse, the head of the rustlers, makes advances on Ellen and offers to pay her father's bail, but she refuses, and Slim and Bud follow him off the ranch. Slim tricks Morse into believing that he wants to join his gang and thereby finds out that he owns the Bar X ranch. Believing Slim has double-crossed him, Bud tells him that they are no longer partners, but later, Slim has Bud arrested to keep him from being killed by Morse's men. Bud escapes from the sheriff and a lynch mob, while Slim returns to Morse's hideout to pretend he has joined the gang and has gotten drunk. When he overhears them plotting to cross the border, he holds them at gunpoint until Bud comes in. The posse arrives after a struggle and arrests the rustlers, and Slim explains that he is a detective with the Cattlemen's Association and clears Bud's name with the sheriff. Walker is freed, and Bud and Ellen continue their romance.
