In 1870, adventurer Cecil Rhodes travels to South Africa to seek his fame and fortune through diamond prospecting. He has great success and comes to control the Kimberley mines, then attempts to create an even greater empire for himself. He dies just as his dream of a united South Africa is nearly fulfilled by the end of the Boer Wars. He is buried high on a mountain top, in the land that would bear his name: Rhodesia.

This film was also known under the title Rhodes, the Empire Builder. It was released in Great Britain under the title Rhodes of Africa. Variety reported that actor Ndanisa Kumalo was a native of Matabeleland. Modern sources include Producer Michael Balcon, Design Oscar Werndorff, Costumes Joe Strassner, Sound A. F. Birch and Philip Dorte, and Music Director Louis Levy in the production.
