Adam Courtney, an American who owns a Philippine sugar mill, doubts his wife's fidelity and accidentally kills the uncle of his wife's lover. The body is found by the roadside. The uncle, Manuel Hidalgo, was an employee of the mill and a major figure in the workers' union. Two of the townspeople, Lydia Trasmonte and Angel Mascardo, take advantage of the old labor organizer's death to incite the town against the Americans. An innocent boy is charged with Hidalgo's murder, and Yoyong, the town drunk and companion to the boy, pleads in vain with Courtney to exonerate him. Courtney is finally arrested, but the case against him becomes clouded: Margaret Courtney breaks off with her lover and comes to her husband's defense. Courtney, however, refuses to make public his wife's infidelity. Yoyong ends the intrigue by stabbing Courtney to death.
