Seattle documentary filmmaker Eli Kimaro goes in search of her roots and discovers long held dark family secrets. Kimaro is the daughter of a Tanzanian father and Korean mother. Despite the fact she spent many of her childhood summers in Tanzania, Kimaro never felt she developed a strong bond with the African side of her family. When he father retired to Tanzania to re-establish ties to his native Chagga tribe, Kimaro planned to document his journey on film as one of the few Chagga children to receive a first-rate Western education. Over the course of filming for four years, Kimaro discovers a connection with her Chagga aunts--one based on sexual abuse that had been long hidden and never discussed among the family members. With her experience as a domestic violence counselor, Kimaro is able to bridge the large cultural gap between her and her Chagga relatives and begin the long-delayed healing process.
