Bill Bartlett, an eager young newspaper reporter, witnesses Malcom Jennings' murder at the college campus campanile. He joins Captain Ed Kyne and Sergeant Lorrimer and helps them question suspects Ann Michaels, who dated Jennings; Professor C. Edson Hawley, a noted criminologist who is Ann's alibi; and his own girl friend, Lillian Voyne. The interrogations lead them to the offices of attorneys Smythe and Brock, where they find Smythe's body. His secretary Hilda Lund connects Smythe with Jennings. When Kyne finds a gun in Lillian's apartment, she is arrested, and Bill does some independent investigating. While he visits Hawley's laboratory, Smythe's partner, Brock, arrives, argues with Hawley and apparently commits suicide. Bill now suspects that Hawley killed Brock and questions him. Hawley confesses to all three murders, and reveals that he was in love with Ann, who was secretly married to Jennings. Hawley tries to kill Bill with poison gas, but Kyne arrives in time to save him. Meanwhile, the last of the mystery is cleared when Blackie Atwater, a gambler friend of Lillian's, confesses that he is Ann's father. Bill recovers from the gas and gets his exclusive story.
