Fuzzy Q. Jones and Tom Cameron, also known as "The Lone Rider," escape a fistfight in the Sandy Bend saloon, and later read a letter from their friend, rancher Joe Hawkes, who has sent for them. Fuzzy and Tom then are contacted by Hawkes's niece Jean, who takes them to Hawkes' house. There they find that Hawkes has been shot and killed by a .41 caliber pistol. Jean explains that Hawkes sent for them because realtor George Clarke has been forcing ranchers off their land with crooked foreclosures, as gold has been found in the area. Tom goes to see Clarke and insists on joining his gang because he cheated him out of a job by murdering Hawkes. At the same time, Jean and Fuzzy consult with the sheriff, but Jean privately confesses her concerns that Tom will get into trouble. Clarke agrees to Tom's demands, but sends his thugs, Mitter, Gandon and Williams, to ambush him after he leaves. Fuzzy, who has been lurking around Clarke's ranch, forewarns Tom, who picks a fight with Williams, whom he discovers uses a .41 caliber pistol. Williams escapes on Tom's horse, but is killed by his own gang when Clarke and Mitter mistake him for Tom. Clarke blames Tom for the murder, and the sheriff, who misconstrued Jean's warning to mean that Tom is a troublemaker, arrests The Lone Rider. In order to raise Tom's bail, Jean sells Mitter the quick-claim deed to Hawkes's ranch, but Fuzzy refuses to use the money and warns Mitter that Jean is still a minor and that the sale is therefore illegal. Mitter picks a fight with Fuzzy, who then engineers his own arrest for being drunk and disorderly. With the use of a microphone and amplifier, Fuzzy and Tom trick the sheriff into releasing them because he thinks he is surrounded. In order to break up Clarke's gang, Tom and Fuzzy pit Mitter and Gandon against each other by convincing Gandon that Mitter and Clarke plan to cut him out of the Hawkes property. The outlaws then get into a shooting match, during which Gandon is killed, and Mitter is wounded and arrested. The next morning, Tom confronts Clarke and tells him that Mitter is going to confess. After Tom warns the sheriff about his activities, Clarke arrives at the jail gunning for Mitter. Mitter is murdered, but Clarke escapes, and Tom must pursue him to convince the sheriff that he is not involved. While Fuzzy holds off the rest of Clarke's gang, Tom fights with Clarke until the sheriff arrives to arrest the outlaw. Jean reinherits her uncle's ranch and invites Tom and Fuzzy to stay on for a few weeks, but they are called away to help another friend in need.
