When Jimmie Nelson graduates from college, he is rewarded with a job offer from his father John, who is the president of the C. G. & F. Railroad. Jimmie is a lazy lad, however, and works for only two days before leaving on a vacation. Determined to help build his son's character, John gives him a thousand dollars and tells him to make it on his own. Jimmie decides to make good by getting a job in the C. G. & F. yards under an assumed name. Through his hard work, Jimmie makes friends with co-worker Tom Summers and yardmaster Sam Rogers, whose daughter Rose becomes the object of Jimmie's affections. Jimmie makes an enemy, however, in yard foreman Durkin. When Tom sees Durkin stealing supplies, he informs Jimmie, who enters the cab of his engine and prepares to go to his father. The villainous Durkin intercedes by throwing a switch on the line, which causes Jimmie to accidentally run over and kill Tom. After Durkin's treachery is revealed, he is sent to prison, while Jimmie's despondency over his friend's death grows until he asks to be transferred to the nearby town of Granite, where a position as night operator has become available. Later, Durkin escapes from prison and, bent on revenge against Jimmie, travels to Granite. He sends a freight train hurtling downhill on a collision course with a passenger-carrying midnight special. Jimmie learns of the runaway train, but Durkin captures him before he can change the switch. After a desperate battle, Jimmie bests Durkin and prevents the wreck by altering the tracks. The exhausted Jimmie collapses, then regains consciousness to see John and Rose, who were aboard the endangered train. While Jimmie recuperates, John proclaims his pride in his son's transformation and his approval of Rose as his future daughter-in-law.
