Manufacturer Winthrop Beauvel is married to Isabel, a successful novelist who is bored with her husband and is the pseudonymous author of a bitter tract on marriage. Winthrop reads the article, writes the author, and arranges to discuss it with her. Isabel asks her friend Mary to pose as the author and discuss the article with Winthrop. He is forced to spend the night in a hotel because of a rainstorm, and Isabel accuses him of unfaithfulness, using the incident as an excuse for a European divorce. En route, she meets Carl Vaudry, a flirt, and falls in love with him; on the day the divorce is to be granted, Vaudry jilts her, whereupon she drops the case and returns home. Meanwhile, Winthrop, thinking himself free, marries Mary. Following a violent encounter between the two women, Mary attempts suicide by throwing herself in front of a car; Isabel, realizing her seriousness, agrees to a bona fide divorce.
