Cast & Crew
Yance Calhoun, who has been breeding horses for fifty years, stubbornly clings to raising his horses himself, even in the face of progress, which brings cars and the transformation of open range to wheat farms. Yance clashes with his neighbor, Jordan Hadley, who decides to fence his ranch land and turn it into wheat fields. Yance's fears that his horses will be injured by the barbed wire come true when his favorite horse, Konga, leads a stampede into Hadley's field. Konga's shoulder is torn by the wire, and when Yance asks for damages, Hadley threatens to shoot any man or animal that steps foot on his property. Finding themselves in financial straits, local land owners try to sell their land to Hadley for cash, but he rejects their offers and tells them that he can get a better deal by buying the land after the bank forecloses on them. Hadley's daughter Judith, who does not share her father's views, becomes friendly with Yance after she helps his son Steve dress Konga's wound. Judith, who owns a ranch in California, offers to buy Konga, but Yance refuses to sell the horse because he has raised it since it was an orphaned colt. When the sheriff attaches Yance's herd for payment of the bank debt, Konga gallops away into the hills. Meanwhile, Hadley, tiring of the raids on his fields, rounds up the wild horses and traps Konga. When Yance hears of it, he rushes to Hadley's farm, where he learns that Konga has been shot. Judith, disgusted by her father's behavior, leaves for her California ranch. Yance trespasses on Hadley's property to learn the fate of Konga, and Hadley orders him off at gunpoint. As Hadley is about to shoot Yance, Yance draws his gun and kills him. After Yance is arrested for murder, a court sentences him to ten years in prison. Four years later, Yance is pardoned and returns home to find that Steve has restored the ranch to prosperity. Yance is shocked when he sees Konga grazing in a field near the house, but he soon learns from Judith that Konga was only wounded by her father and that she nursed him back to health. Judith informs Yance that it was she who arranged for his pardon and that she is engaged to marry Steve.
