Sheriff Bill Mason discovers that his friend, Ben Brokaw, has become a thief in order to make a decent life for his three-year-old daughter Mary. When Bill catches Ben counting his money and confronts him about his crimes, Ben draws his gun, and Bill is forced to shoot him. As he dies, Ben reveals that his wife died giving birth to Mary, and Bill promises to rear Mary himself and never tell her that her father was an outlaw. Remorseful at the loss of his friend, Bill resigns as sheriff, vows never to carry a gun again and adopts Mary. Years later, Mary is a grown woman in a new town, where Bill is a driver for the local stagecoach. She is in love with Ray Burton, the son of the head of the rangers, who is in the hospital recovering from a gunshot wound he received during a gun fight with the Al Lobo gang. Bill then meets Brent, Ben's old accomplice, who now works for Lobo, and Brent blackmails Bill into helping him rob the stagecoach, otherwise he will tell Mary that Bill killed her outlaw father. The day of the heist, Ray is on duty and shoots Bill, who is wearing a disguise, as the thieves make their get-away. While Ray runs for a doctor, Bill tells Mary the bullet only grazed him, then says that Brent robbed the coach and is forcing him and Mary to leave town with him. Mary and Bill leave a note for Ray to follow them, then head for the Mexican border to retrieve the stolen money. In a small town just short of the border, Ray overhears Brent telling his partner Joe of his lust for Mary and fights Joe, but is eventually knocked down long enough for Joe to escape with Brent to their cave hideout. There Brent and Joe tie up Bill and blindfold both him and his horse and send them wandering off alone. After dynamiting the cave and trapping the rest of their gang so they can split the loot, Brent and Joe escape and take Mary as their captive. Meanwhile, Ray saves Bill and, arming him, makes him a deputy so they can go after Brent. They follow Brent to a cabin hideout, where Ray breaks in through the roof and arrests Joe as Bill kills Brent in a shoot-out outside. The town then elects Bill sheriff.
