Cast & Crew
Paddo O'Reilly, a brutish, heavy-drinking Irishman of limited intelligence, is the delight of his cronies in the local pub but the despair of his family; his grown son, Willie, is crippled from the time, years ago, when Paddo drunkenly tossed him into the air and failed to catch him. One day, in an alcoholic rage, Paddo accidentally kills Mr. Green, the father of Willie's sweetheart, Maura. Paddo is given a 5-year prison sentence, and Willie assumes the position of head of the family by opening a shoe-repair business. Paddo's wife, Daylia, turns to drink, and his daughter, Josie, shamed by the family disgrace, takes up with a flashy local gambler. Upon his release from jail, Paddo defiantly tries to resume his paternal authority; he threatens to force Josie into giving up her boyfriend and tries to break up Willie's marriage to Maura. Only when he almost kills his old friend, Dovetail, is Paddo finally brought to his senses.
