Cast & Crew
Vaudeville singer John L. Cole, who performs under the name "Happy" Jack Cole and is called Hap by his friends, is singing in the Shanghai Follies when Mary Gorham mistakes him for pilot Bill Lyons. Mary persuades the bewildered Hap to see her father, airplane manufacturer and radio tycoon Charles Gorham, who also assumes that he is Lyons, suffering from amnesia. The Gorhams are overjoyed to find him, for Lyons disappeared while flying a top secret plane and the Navy fears that he sold it to foreign concerns. While they are talking, however, the lights go out, the butler, Morley, is stabbed, and Mary and Gorham disappear. When Hap awakes, he is kidnapped by Al, Porozzi and Joe, three foreign agents working for a mysterious boss. Hap escapes, but when he goes to the theater, the mugs follow him. He escapes again by getting into a cab with Gorham's friend, J. Lansing Bennett, whom Hap thinks he can trust. Bennett knocks him out, however, and takes him to the ship where Mary and Gorham are being held captive. Hap is threatened by the captain of the ship, but is able to engineer another escape, and although he winds up in jail, he is bailed out by Charlie Davis, the long-suffering stage manager of the theater where he works. As they are walking down the street, Hap is once again kidnapped, and Charlie finds himself face to face with Lyons, who thrashes poor Charlie for thinking he is Hap. Al and Porozzi take Hap to their boss, who turns out to be Bennett, and Bennett questions him about the location of the plane. Hap pretends to be Lyons in order to free Mary and Gorham, and agrees to build a new plane for Bennett. Hap sings a warning to Mary after she is freed to alert the police about Bennett, and finally realizing that Hap is not Lyons, Mary tells him that she loves him. Bennett sends Hap with Al and Porozzi to build another plane, after which Lyons, who did sell out to Bennett, arrives after being unconscious for a week due to the plane crash. Bennett says that he will kill Mary and Gorham, and sends the ship captain after Hap, but Hap escapes again, this time going to see U.S. Consul E. R. Brown. Brown does not believe Hap's story though, and attempts to keep him captive. Hap gets away and goes to the theater, where he convinces the Marines in the audience to follow him to Bennett's house. After a struggle, Bennett, Al, Joe and Porozzi are arrested, and Hap finally meets Lyons, who is also arrested. Hap releases Mary and Gorham, and soon after gives his final performance at the theater before he begins his new life with Mary and his new career on Gorham's radio show.
