As a war between cattlemen and homesteaders brews, Gail, the daughter of homesteader Boone Dawson, and Dan, the son of head rancher Hub Stockton, fall in love. On the day the couple are to be secretly married, Gail's cousin Tom is shot and the "nesters," as they are referred to by the cattlemen, suspect Dan. Dan, however, saw that the killers were Blackie Fallon and Mart, two of attorney Gabe Bowdre's men. Bowdre warns Dan that he does not have enough evidence to arrest his men and is backed up by the sheriff. Frustrated, Dan goes to his father's ranch and attempts to convince Hub and the other ranchers that Bowdre is stirring up the war, which centers around the homesteaders building a dam to regulate the water leading into the valley they all inhabit. Hub and the others, believing that Bowdre is their ally, refuse to believe Dan, and Dan leaves after he and his father quarrel. Dan gets Gail from her father's house and they are married. The couple vow to stick together and not get caught up in their families' feud, but just after the ceremony, Dan's friend Red tells him that Hub has been shot in the back, presumably by a nester. Dan and Gail go to the Stockton ranch, where the ranchers are hostile to both of them. Before he dies, Hub condemns the marriage and orders Dan to carry on with the war. One of the cattlemen then arrives and proudly announces that he has just killed one of the Dawson clan. Dan tries to get the sheriff to arrest him, after which all the Stockton ranchhands quit to work for Hammond, another rancher who they say will stand up against the nesters. Dan and Gail hear the men plan a raid against the homesteaders that afternoon, and despite Dan's reminder of their vow of neutrality, Gail leaves to warn her family and friends. Dan also leaves and finds Bowdre with his two henchmen. They surprise Dan and are about to kill him when Red arrives, and after telling them that he has a quarrel to settle with Dan, Red pretends to shoot him. After the others leave, Dan tells Red to keep an eye on Hammond's men while he follows Mart. Meanwhile, Gail warns her family of the upcoming danger. Dan follows Mart to town, where he sees homesteaders selling their claims to him. Dan fights with Mart, gets the deeds and finds more, all made out to Bowdre, in Bowdre's desk. The cattlemen and the nesters are beginning their gun battle when Dan arrives and shows them the deeds as proof that Bowdre instigated the war in order to gain control of the homesteader's land and water rights. While the sheriff apprehends Mart and Blackie, Dan chases Bowdre, and Bowdre, who killed Hub, falls from a cliff during the struggle. Boone and Hammond agree to share the water after it is dammed, and Dan and Gail are reunited.
