Cast & Crew
In the 1920's, while working as a waitress in a country cafe, Kay Parrish, the daughter of a ruined millionaire, meets fast talking New Yorkers Terrence "Terry" Gallagher and Chuck Ahearn. Impressed by Kay's style and beauty, Terry gives her his calling card and suggests that she look him up in New York. Kay dismisses Terry, but then learns that her father has committed suicide and has left her nothing. Determined to fend for herself, Kay moves to New York but is unable to find work. Soon desperate, Kay remembers Terry and goes to see him at his Hee Haw Club, a notorious speakeasy and "sucker joint." Moved by Kay's story, Terry hires her as one of his club "girls," and Kay is quickly initiated into the world of professional "entertaining." After a short time, Kay grows disgusted with the Hee Haw and tells Terry that he should open a respectable club. Terry dismisses the idea, however, and Kay continues working as a "gigolette," eventually meeting the wealthy Gregg Emerson. As revenge for a previous bilking at the Hee Haw, Gregg noisily refuses to pay his bill and is knocked out by bouncer Chuck Ahearn. After Kay delivers the half-conscious Gregg to his apartment, Gregg invites her to a picnic, and a romance soon blossoms. Terry then tells Kay that he has been forced to close the Hee Haw because of new liquor license laws, but is opening a new club, the Casino De Monaco. At Kay's suggestion, Terry populates his elegant club with both "gigolos" and "gigolettes." When Gregg's parents learn that Kay is a high-class taxi dancer, they express their disapproval and snub her. Although upset about Gregg, Kay rejects Terry's declaration of love and prepares to move. Gregg, however, intercepts Kay and convinces her that he loves her in spite of his parent's attitudes. As Kay happily prepares to marry Gregg, Terry is confronted by gangster Vanie Rourke. To force Terry to purchase his "bum" liquor, Rourke buys out the club's creditors and demands that Terry re-pay his debts or lose the casino. Determined not to return to his cheating ways, Terry reconciles himself to losing the club, but is surprised when Kay hands him a check, which has been drawn from a wedding gift from Gregg. Although the casino is saved, Kay's gesture is misintrepreted by Gregg, who assumes that Kay and Terry have conspired to swindle him. Eventually, Terry shows Gregg his error, and Kay and Gregg are reunited.
