Waiter Jimmie Dolan, a former jockey, finally gets to race again when Kentucky gentleman gambler Colonel Ainsworth, who always loses his bets, enters his four-year-old thoroughbred in a county fair race. Despite intervention by gambler "Diamond" Barnett and his gang, Jimmie wins not only the race, but also the affection of Ainsworth's daughter Alice, who works as a cigar clerk at the racetrack restaurant. At Barnett's hideout, a jockey who has been kicked out of the Jockey's Association for throwing a race for Diamond threatens to expose Diamond until he gives him $5,000. Diamond and his henchman, Specs Matthews, plan a new scheme until their cohort Tout arrives and tells them about Colonel Ainsworth's winning horse, "Little Alice." One of Diamond's men, Lefty, visits Job, Colonel Ainsworth's jockey, and offers him a bribe of $500 to throw the handicap. Job refuses and then explains what has happened to Jimmie and Alice, who chase Lefty away. Diamond visits the track and offers the colonel $4,500 for Little Alice, which he refuses, despite the fact that he is in debt for stable bills. There is a commotion at the track after the jockey who bribed Diamond is found shot. Jimmie, Alice and the colonel visit the stable and find that their handler Curfew has been attacked and Little Alice drugged. The colonel gets a veterinarian, while Jimmie sets about "sweating" Little Alice to get the drugs out of her system. When Tout discovers that the colonel has an unpaid feed bill, Diamond pays it on condition that Little Alice is locked up in her stall. Jimmie distracts the guard and frees Little Alice, then tells the colonel to bet everything he has on Little Alice, whom he puts in a horse van, hoping to get her to the track in time for the race. After Diamond discovers that Little Alice is free, he has his men guard all the roads leading to the track, but Jimmie and Little Alice make it in time. Little Alice wins the handicap, and the $40,000 prize money means that the colonel can retire to a farm in Kentucky. He asks Jimmie to be his manager, and Jimmie and Alice decide to get married.
