Cast & Crew
After he is dismissed from his job as a commercial airline pilot for crashing his plane while performing stunts to impress one of his girl friends, Terry Prescott and his mechanic "Waffles" Billings, find themselves shanghaied aboard a pearl diving ship owned by Captain Nelson. Deciding to earn enough money to buy a plane and join the RAF, Terry and Waffles embark upon a successful pearl diving career. Once they have collected a valuable cache of pearls, Terry and Waffles notify Nelson that they are quitting, and Nelson then informs them that the oyster bed in which they have been operating belongs to the Sultana, and therefore they have been poaching. Nelson threatens to notify the authorities unless Terry divides his profits with him. Believing that Nelson is lying, Terry insists upon his share of the pearls. In the ensuing fight, Terry knocks Nelson out and flees with Waffles. On the road to Singapore, Terry and Waffles spot a broken-down Ford and stop to help. The car's driver, Mary Brooks, introduces herself as the orphaned daughter of missionaries. In reality, Mary is a gold-digging actress who is playing on Terry's sympathies. Feeling sorry for the girl, Terry offers her a ride to Rang Sang, then upon arriving at the hotel, he invites her to dinner. At the restaurant, a crooked pearl dealer named Gabby Hart approaches Terry's table and makes an appointment to buy the pearls in the morning. That evening, Terry meets Prince Sali, the Sultana's son, and the prince insists that Terry introduce him to Mary. The next morning, as Terry prepares to go to breakfast with Mary, he notices Sergeant Burns, the district police officer, in the hotel lobby and quickly hands Mary the pouch containing the pearls and asks her to keep them for him. Soon after, Mary disappears with the pearls, and Terry begins a frantic search for her. One day, Terry is summoned to the palace of the Sultana. There, the Sultana accuses Terry of pearl poaching. Freed for lack of evidence, Terry joins Waffles and tracks Mary down at a Singapore hotel. After Terry demands that Mary return the pearls, she is about to hand them over when the police arrive, forcing Terry and Waffles to scurry out the window of her hotel room. Later, Terry threatens to tell the Sultana the truth about Mary, and Mary, who has designs on the prince, gives him the pearls in return for his silence. When Terry goes to sell the gems, however, he is arrested by Burns and the High Commissioner, Sir Reginald Bevin. Upon learning that Terry has been jailed, Mary tells Sali the truth, and he forgives her and promises to intercede with his mother on Terry's behalf. Shortly thereafter, Terry is released on bail posted by the Sultana, who offers to drop all charges and give Terry the pearls if he breaks up her son's romance with Mary. Terry and Waffles decide to frighten Mary into ending her engagement to the prince by pretending to have her kidnapped by extremists. Their plans goes awry, however, when Tada, a servant of the Sultana, kidnaps both Terry and Mary, thinking that he will do his mistress a favor by killing them both. After they are rescued by the Sultana and Waffles, Mary declares that she still intends to marry Sali. The Sultana then consents to the marriage, after which Mary discovers that the prince already has eight wives. Furious, Mary breaks her engagement and realizes that she is in love with Terry. The Sultana then gives Terry the pearls as a wedding present, and with the proceeds from their sale, he and Waffles buy a plane and join the RAF.
