At the Square Deal Saloon, saloon keeper Vic Landreau urges Deputy Sheriff Ed Slade to run against Sheriff Jim Hanley in the elections. When Jim comes into the saloon, he tells Vic, whom he dislikes, that he has sent for some friends who will help him clean the "trash" element out of town. Vic offers to back Jim's campaign if he leaves him alone, and Jim is so offended by the suggestion that he strikes Vic and leaves. Jim then visits newspaper editor Dan Webster and his daughter Betty at their Gila Valley Free Press office. Before Jim names the gang of outlaws that he believes are taking over the county, an unidentified assailant shoots and kills him. Somewhere nearby, Billy the Kid and his friends, Fuzzy Q. Jones and Jeff, are at their campsite when a shot is fired at Billy from behind a tree. Billy and Jeff capture Butch, the would-be killer, who reluctantly admits that he was hired by Vic, who knows that Jim sent for Billy. Billy then confronts Vic at the saloon, but Vic denies any involvement. After Butch escapes, Billy learns that Jim was murdered and Ed warns him to leave town. Vic then sends his thugs to beat up Dan and Betty and vandalize the presses, but Billy, Fuzzy and Jeff come to their aid. To impress the local citizens, Ed had planned to arrest the vandals, but Billy has put them to work cleaning up the mess they created, and no arrests are made. Angry that Billy is thwarting his plans to run the county, Vic becomes even angrier when Dan and Betty nominate Fuzzy to run for sheriff. Betty is kidnapped when she goes out to deliver newspapers, but when Jeff finds her abandoned cart, he, Fuzzy and Billy follow the gang's tracks to their hideout and rescue her. Later, they kidnap Ed and force him to write a confession about his involvement with Vic, which Betty plans to print. Although the presses are again vandalized, Billy, Fuzzy and Jeff work with the Websters to publish a limited edition featuring Ed's confession. The next day, Betty distributes the newspaper and Billy hand-delivers a copy to Vic. Vic and Billy fight, but Billy beats the saloon keeper and takes him to jail. Finally, Fuzzy is elected sheriff and reluctantly takes over his duties as Billy and Jeff go their own way.
