Cast & Crew
Cowboy Peewee, suspected of being part of the infamous Marshall gang, is in jail awaiting hanging after being found guilty of murdering a state ranger. In the hope of getting a last minute confession from Peewee, the sheriff places ranger Sunset Carson, who pretends to be a horse thief, in the next cell. An old man and young woman arrive at the jail saying that they are Peewee's father and sister, just as Peewee is shot through the cell window. When the pair, Ann Marshall and Dakota, take Peewee's body away, the sheriff and Sunset follow. Outside town, Peewee revives, then the three abandon the wagon and flee on horseback. The sheriff and Sunset suspect that the Marshall gang is behind Peewee's breakout. In Denton City, a lawless area west of the Pecos river, Matt Conroy, head of a cattle company, posts a reward for Ann and Sunset recognizes her as Peewee's "sister." During a cattle rancher's meeting that night, the ranchers learn that the Marshall gang has taken another herd. When the ranchers leave, Sunset lingers outside, and overhears bankers Ed and Frank Pearson's conversation with Conroy, which reveals Conroy is stealing the cattle to drive up prices. Ann and her gang then burst in and Ann demands a large sum of money after accusing Conroy of cheating the ranchers and murdering her father. A shoot-out ensues and when Ann is slightly wounded, Sunset comes to her aid. Conroy then sends the Pearsons out in the dark after the gang, then shoots Frank in the back and later blames it on Ann. Meanwhile Sunset lets Ann's horse take them to her camp and as he tends to her, he introduces himself as "The Kid," the horse thief in the cell next to Peewee. When Peewee and Dakota return, they are suspicious of Sunset. Ann tells Sunset she wants the money to repay the ranchers and that Conroy cheated her father out of his legitimate cattle business, framed him, then killed him. She also believes that Conroy fabricated Peewee's involvement in the murder of the ranger, but has no proof. Later, when Dakota escorts Sunset away from the camp, he shows him the spot where Peewee and the ranger were ambushed. After Dakota leaves, Sunset examines the area and finds spent rifle shells. Back in town, Sunset, still posing as the Kid, makes a deal with Conroy to bring in Ann for the reward money, plus the fancy rifle he sees on Conroy's desk. Sunset then returns to Ann's camp to show her the rifle shells that prove Conroy is behind the death of the ranger. Sunset tells Ann that to clear herself of Frank's murder she must give herself up, but just then Dakota and Peewee arrive and accuse The Kid of working for Conroy. Sunset shows Ann his ranger appointment letter and tries to convince her the law is the only way to get Conroy, but when Peewee and Dakota remind her that the law nearly had Peewee hung, she hesitates. Sunset gets away from the men and forcibly takes Ann with him to give herself up. In town Conroy believes the Kid has fulfilled his promise by turning in Ann. When Ed Pearson refuses to kill Ann, Conroy assigns one of his henchmen to kill Ed. Sunset saves Ed and asks him to summon Ann's gang using his horse and appointment letter as proof of Ed's sincerity. One of Conroy's men sees Ed leaving town and Conroy goes after Sunset and Ann. A gunfight then ensues and just as Ann and Sunset run out of ammunition, Ed brings Ann's gang. Sunset ultimately arrests Conroy and eventually Ann is restored to the Marshall ranch.
