Allen McCleod is an unemployed drifter who lives on the income of his wife, Katherine. His friend Max introduces his girl friend, Victoria, a fashion model, to Allen. Aware of Allen's attraction to Victoria, Max tries to interest him in Janice, a brilliant young photographer, but Janice is interested only in her work. Allen finally persuades Victoria to have an affair with him, but he proves to be impotent. Finding no happiness with his wife at home, Allen leaves the house, gets drunk, and at 3 a. m. arrives at Janice's studio with a prostitute. A reprimand from Janice prompts him to write two letters: a love letter to Victoria and a note to Katherine about their marital difficulties. The letter to Katherine becomes an apology and plea for understanding. In his distraught condition, Allen encloses Katherine's letter in the envelope intended for Victoria and Victoria's in the one addressed to Katherine. Meanwhile, despite her love for Allen, Victoria has accepted Max's proposal of marriage and, having recognized Allen's basic weakness and irreponsibility, informs him on their last night together of his error in posting the letters. After saving Katherine from an attempted suicide provoked by her desperate love for him, Allen returns to the confinement of his marriage.
