Cast & Crew
A distinguished writer is left to rear his 4-year-old daughter, Mari, when his French wife dies from tuberculosis. Placed in a convent, the child becomes seriously ill. Realizing his neglect, the father takes Mari home and arranges to remarry, thus providing his daughter with a mother and allowing himself more time to devote to his writing. The new wife cherishes Mari, although she and the writer never consummate their marriage. The family grows closer, despite the writer's inability to sell his work, the daughter's racial harassment at school, and the wife's unrequited yearning for affection. By the end of World War II, the author has gained success but is left again to tend Mari alone when his wife dies of a heart attack. Mari, now 20 years old, decides to leave home and marry.
Released in Japan in 1962 as Musume to watashi.
