Synopsis

After Artie Hamilton is expelled from college and thrown out by his irate father, a railroad magnate, he proclaims that within a year he will have enough money to buy the railroad. In Byways, New York, Artie becomes a book agent and, seeing a girl's seminary, climbs the wall to sell books there. At first glance, Artie falls in love with Annabelle Willowby and decides to marry her. When he learns that wealthy Uriah Updike has promised Annabelle's father half his fortune to marry her, and that his own father intends to build a branch of the railroad on Updike's property, Artie arranges for a college chum, disguised as a rich widow, to romance Updike. After the "widow" convinces Updike that the railroad wants a plot that "she" and Artie own, Artie, with a syndicate including Annabelle's father, buys Updike's land and sells him the other plot for an exorbitant rate. Artie's father is forced to buy Artie's property for a million dollars, and Annabelle, once she realizes that Artie does not love the "widow," agrees to marry him.
