The working titles of this film were The Secret of Buddha and A Scream in the Dark. A Film Daily news item noted that production was slated to start in early August 1935, and that this was the second in a series of Lon Chaney, Jr. films for Commodore Pictures Corp. Although Scream in the Night was produced in 1935 and approved for release at that time by the PCA, no national release date has been determined. The earliest review located appeared in Variety in August 1943 when the film opened at the Strand Theatre in Brooklyn, NY. That review noted that it "look[ed] as though it were made several years ago." According to Hollywood Reporter production charts, Lucien Prival was cast in the film and some scenes were filmed on location in Glendale, CA. Modern sources credit Dick L'Estrange as the production manager and Zarah Tazil as the technical director, and expand the plot as follows: An inspector and detectives Jack Wilson and Yuting meet in Singapore to plan the arrest of Johnny Fly, a jewel thief and murderer. A woman named Edith asks Jack to protect her uncle's ruby from Fly, who later robs him. Yuting is murdered by one of Fly's cohorts. Fly then has Edith kidnapped and tries to force her to reveal the location of the ruby. Eventually, the inspector saves Jack, Edith is rescued and the stolen jewels are recovered.
