Cast & Crew
Mulcahy, a drunken, blasphemous writer living in a small Irish town, stands in front of the town church and challenges God to strike him down. He is suddenly shot and killed by a stranger who claims that an unknown force prompted him. The stranger, known only as Johnny Nobody because he claims to remember nothing before the fateful event, goes on trial in Dublin, and his deed captures public sentiment. Father Carey, a village priest called to support the defense claim that Mulcahy's death was a miracle and Johnny Nobody an instrument of heavenly vengeance, becomes suspicious of certain letters received by Johnny from a small coastal town. Meanwhile, Father Carey is hounded by a trial reporter, Miss Floyd. Traveling to the source of the mysterious letters, Father Carey discovers that Miss Floyd is Johnny's wife, and that the two killed Mulcahy because he had stolen thematic material from an unpublished book written by Johnny. Miss Floyd attempts to stop the priest from giving evidence by trumping up charges against him, but he eludes police and returns to Dublin. He arrives at the courtroom as the jury acquits Johnny, and his pleas are ignored. During a heated argument in the courtroom, however, Johnny himself blasphemes and is stricken with a fatal heart attack.
