Cast & Crew
Red North, a bush pilot in the small town of Nouvelle, in the Canadian outlands, is joined by his brother, Paul Gerard, a mean-spirited man who suffers from feelings of inferiority. Paul, who flew with Red in the Air Force, now plans to compete with a superior float plane with his brother's modest freight transport business in order to spite him. Paul harbors a lifelong resentment of his brother's success, which was exacerbated by an incident during the war in which Paul's recklessness resulted in the death of two of Red's pilot friends. Paul takes up residence at the local inn, run by his assistant, Chuck, and a widow named Mrs. Ward, who is the mother of Red's girl friend Hillary. One of the boarders is Scotsman Andy Moody, who hopes to strike gold so that he can propose to Mrs. Ward. Paul immediately begins to pursue Hillary. Hillary, who is the local schoolteacher, also receives a marriage proposal from Bill Gillespie, her old boss from Toronto. Hillary is only interested in Red, though, and encourages him to take a more secure job so that they can settle down. One day, months later, while Red is detained, Chuck agrees to transport a dangerous shipment of nitrol in order to keep Paul from stealing Red's charter contract. Chuck dies when his plane explodes, and Hillary blames Red and returns to Toronto to work for Bill. Red reacts by drinking too much and because of his drinking, when a pilot is needed to bring a scarlet fever vaccine to a lumber camp, Paul is chosen over Red. Hillary joins Paul as a guide. After a successful drop, Paul's plane develops engine trouble and crashes. Although Hillary is unhurt, Paul has suffered broken ribs and punctured lungs. Before he dies, he confesses that Chuck's death was his fault, not Red's. Red rescues Hillary, and convinces her to marry him and not return to Toronto. Later, Scotty announces that he has struck gold, and takes Hillary's return railroad ticket to propose to Mrs. Ward.
