Alice is a spirited 12-year-old girl hitting the wall of early adolescence. Her struggle to retain her sense of self, despite the onslaught of other voices, denotes girls' particular coming of age. As Alice teeters on the edge of adolescence her connection to her mother, Tina, seesaws between explosive outbursts and warm intimacy. They are forced to constantly renegotiate the balance of their relationship. The intricacies of sixth grade social order are played out between Alice and her best friend Eliza. The painful intersection of popularity, class and the pressure to grow up quickly, strain and then break the ties between the friends. Alice attempts to balance the demands of home, school and her own sense of what is right. She looks to the people around her, trying to comprehend a set of rules that seem to be in constant flux.
