Edna Reed, wife of a petty salesclerk, is denied the pleasures of a holiday celebration because of their limited income. Mrs. Parker, who lives in an adjoining apartment and is the lover of Kenneth Hamilton, asks Edna to join a companion of Hamilton's for tea at a Russian cafe; during the outing, Hamilton becomes fascinated with Edna. The following day, he induces Edna to come to his apartment, but Mrs. Parker on a surprise visit discovers them and becomes violently jealous. Edna's husband, John, receives a promotion and rejects Hamilton's gift of flowers. But Hamilton inadvertently reveals his liaison with Edna to John on a business trip. John enters Mrs. Parker's apartment, accuses Hamilton of intimacy with his wife, and apparently kills Hamilton. At the trial, Edna confesses to being intimate with Hamilton, but the prosecuting attorney brings out the truth and Mrs. Parker confesses to the murder.
