Caroline Knollys is about to tell her husband, Hubert, that she is pregnant when she discovers him in the arms of his secretary, Emily Madden. Determined to teach him a lesson, she does not tell him of her condition but goes off to Europe and leaves Hubert in the care of Emily. She has the baby, but this does not prevent her from becoming the most discussed woman on the Continent. Hubert becomes jealous, especially when she returns home in the company of young architect Lawrence Sanbury, whom she is sponsoring. Tired of Emily, Hubert repents, but Caroline is obdurate. He pays Caroline an unexpected visit, hoping to discover evidence for a divorce. Instead, he is presented with his son, and the couple are reconciled.
