In his greed, Caleb Carson, a Crucible City steel mill owner, ignores pleas from his son Charles to correct serious safety problems in the mill. One night, Claire Daudet, a mill worker, falls down an unprotected elevator shaft in the mill, but is saved from death by an alert Charles. Meanwhile, Petroski, an opportunistic labor agitator, takes advantage of the workers' mounting dissatisfaction and incites them to riot. In addition, he hires two thugs to steal Caleb's car and run down Nora Reily, the young daughter of a mill worker. Convinced that Caleb was driving the car, the rioting mob goes after him, but is stopped by the judicious Father Conway. While Dr. Robert Delaney, the fiancé of Edith Carson, Caleb's daughter, hears Nora's dying revelation that Caleb was not in the car, a detective hired by Caleb tracks down Charles on suspicion that he had stolen valuable papers from his father's safe. When Claire overhears Caleb and the detective discussing the papers, she informs them that Petroski had stolen them and left them with her mother. In his haste to escape from Claire's house, Petroski knocks over a lamp, which sets the building on fire and traps Caleb's youngest daughter Mary inside. Petroski is pursued by Charles and accidentally drives over a cliff to his death. Dr. Delaney rescues Mary and Caleb is finally forced to reassess his position on Charles and the mill.
