Edwin Booth Benton, an impecunious, egotisitical, and embittered actor who is given a small part in a Broadway production, secures for Sylvia Thurston, a beautiful young actress of his acquaintance, the feminine lead in the play. Sylvia falls in love with Curtis Drake, the play's leading man, and Benton's jealousy is greatly aroused; when Drake and Sylvia announce their engagement, Benton is overcome with rage and substitutes real bullets for the blanks in the prop pistol used to shoot Drake in the third act. The following day, Drake is injured in a fall just after the second act, and Benton (Drake's understudy) must go on in his place; mortally wounded, Drake confesses all and dies with the audience's applause still sounding in his ears.
