Cast & Crew
Mahlee, the Eurasian granddaughter of an avaricious Peking woman who sold her daughter to a rich Englishman for gold, is shunned by the Chinese and called "devil feet" because her feet were never bound. After her grandmother dies, Mahlee and Andrew Templeton, whose father runs the American mission, fall in love, as Mahlee embraces Protestantism. When Sir Philip Sackville and his daughter Blanche visit, Mahlee realizes that Blanche must be her half sister, and Philip her father. After Andrew falls in love with Blanche and shuns Mahlee because of her Chinese blood, Mahlee joins another Eurasian, Sam Wang, in his plans to bring the Boxer Rebellion to Peking. Dressed as a celestial goddess on a float during the Feast of the Red Lantern, Mahlee blesses the Boxers, thus encouraging the people to join the rebellion. When she learns that the mission will be attacked, she warns them, but Sir Philip will not take her with them as they leave. After Wang dies protecting Mahlee from the Boxers, who now distrust her, and they are defeated by the Allies, Mahlee drinks poison and dies.
