Not having seen her mother Elena Montero in over eight years, Agustina arrives backstage at the opera house where her mother is performing. The next day, after attending mass, Agustina's conservative boyfriend, Manolo Fresneda, arrives, and they argue about her new appearance, which has been dictated by Elena. Agustina's father Enrique arrives to cajole Elena into coming back to live with him so that Manolo's parents will give their approval to Manolo and Agustina's marriage; however, Elena will have nothing to do with the plan because she does not like Manolo, so Enrique leaves Agustina in Madrid while he returns to his ranch. Enrique and Elena are married but live apart so that she may pursue her own career and he may continue ranching. When he is gone, Agustina expresses sadness at her mother's decision, and Elena guiltily agrees to go through with the plan only to show Agustina the ludicrousness of it. Agustina and Elena arrive at Enrique's home with a large group of Elena's friends in tow, who too readily make themselves at home. The next morning, Enrique shows Elena around, and she wistfully takes note of the growth and change that have occurred in her absence. Her friends interrupt, and she and Agustina, dressed in bathing suits, join them in exercise. Manolo is infuriated by Agustina's flamboyant costume, and he tries to convince her to return to her old self. They argue and Agustina leaves, followed by Juan Manuel Valladares, Elena's friend, who is the attaché of the Brazilian Embassy. They are caught in a rain storm and seek shelter in the home of the farm's keeper. The old keeper serves them brandy, and Juan remarks that the same situation in Japan would have merited a glass of rice wine. Agustina is intrigued, and the keeper expresses his preference of Juan over Manolo to Agustina. That evening, having watched Elena's friends make a mess of his home, Enrique orders them to leave, which causes Elena to pack her bags as well. As Elena prepares to leave, Juan comes in and confesses his love for Agustina. His ensuing embrace with Elena is seen by Enrique, who assumes that it is one of romantic affection and orders Juan to leave. Juan returns in the morning and invites Agustina to travel to Tokyo with him as his wife. Enrique is informed of the upcoming marriage by Elena, and embarrassed by his previous fit of jealousy, he tells the moving men to stop loading Elena's trunks. Angry because he did not speak his wish for her to stay to her, Elena leaves to board a ship. As she stands at the gangplank, Enrique arrives and they flip a coin to decide if she will stay with him or if he will go with her. The coin lands in the water, and they decide to split their time equally between Madrid and the farm. They walk arm-in-arm aboard the ship as the gangplank is pulled away.
