Texas Jack Carrol and "Starlight," who is billed as the horse with the human brain, entertain at a medicine show. After the show is run out of town, Jack meets Ann Hall, who has been hired by saloon owner Dan Corey as a schoolteacher in the tough town of Escondido. When Cal Kramer, the man Corey sends to meet Ann, arrives in a drunken condition, Jack rescues her and drives her into town. During the ensuing fight, he loses a locket containing a picture of his sister Helen, who committed suicide after she was forced into working in a dance hall. Corey recognizes the picture, confirming Jack's suspicions that he is the man who hired his sister to be a "schoolteacher," and plots to make him confess his role in her fate. Corey takes Ann to his ranch, intending to put her in a dance hall as he did with Helen, but Jack follows them and overcomes Corey, who kills himself to avoid jail. Now that Ann is safe, she and Jack marry and continue with the medicine show.
