Newspaper owner Foxhall Peyton reluctantly lends his usually broke college friend, Jack Wright, who writes for the paper, five hundred dollars on the condition that he write a story to increase circulation. After Jack loses the money in the stock market, he suggests starting a lottery, in which the prize for the woman with the winning ticket would be him for a husband. While hundreds of thousands of women of various sorts buy chances, Jack falls in love with Foxhall's cousin, Helen Heyer. When Jack is unable to cancel the lottery, Helen leaves thinking that Jack is mercenary. After Jack is mobbed during the drawing, Lizzie Roberts, an old maid, produces the winning ticket, but Jack's maid Nora proves that Lizzie stole it from her. Because Nora is in love with Jack's butler, she sells the ticket to Jack for half of the proceeds. When Jack finds Helen, her suitcase pops open to reveal hundreds of tickets which she purchased. They then embrace.
