Soon after arriving in his hometown of Clearwater, returning G.I. soldier Curt Norton gets started on plans to convert his old radio station into a television station. Curt's plans are thwarted, however, when he discovers that his father Amos has not been taking care of the station. He also learns that a rival radio station, run by Eddie Jackson, began operating while he was away, and that Eddie is trying steal away his sweetheart, Jean White. Curt finds himself at a disadvantage in the battle to regain Jean's love when he realizes that Eddie has received the blessing of Jean's father Thaddius. Thaddius is a bitter enemy of Amos', and Amos has recently accused Thaddius of trying to wreck the town. Curt sees his dream of owning a television station all but vanish when he discovers that his father has squandered the money that he has been sending him. Though done with good intentions, Amos has foolishly invested Curt's money in worthless war surplus goods that he cannot sell. Things look hopeless for Curt until Jean suggests that he recoup his losses by holding a giant auction with dancing and music. Hoping to sabotage Curt and Jean's efforts, Eddie hires Mimi, an actress, to cause a scandal by pretending to be a French woman whom Curt married while he was overseas. Although Curt denies he is married, Jean and Curt's friends believe the accusor, and Jean leaves her sweetheart. When Curt decides to disregard his troubles and go ahead with the action, Eddie kidnaps Joe Mahoney, the auctioneer, and holds him prisoner at the radio station. While the auction is postponed, Mimi, who is now living with Jean, succumbs to feelings of guilt and confesses all. After Jean returns to Curt with an apology, Curt finds Jackson and gives him a beating for his misdeeds. The auction is held successfully, and Curt makes enough money from it to buy the radio station and get his television license.
