Narrow-minded, small town officials, led by Squire Tolliver, are shocked when Nan, the schoolmarm, goes out one evening with her sweetheart, Wilbur Howard, and does not come home until daylight. Refusing to believe her story that she and Wilbur were stranded when the horse drawing their carriage ran away, the officials fire her, much to the dismay of her students. Then, once the moral outrage of Tolliver and his cronies has subsided somewhat, it is their own virtue that comes under fire when Wilbur has to save Nan from the squire's son Jim, who tries to rape her. Finally, Nan makes up for the loss of her job by gaining a husband, as she and Wilbur marry shortly after the "scandal" that led to the firing.
