Cast & Crew
Following the bankruptcy of his public utilities company, tycoon Edward Baldwin flees the country on an ocean liner. Newspaper reporter Steve Haines, assigned to interview Baldwin, follows him onto the ship. Among the passengers are veteran actor Booth and his daughter Jane. To benefit the Seaman's Fund, Booth stages a melodrama called "Her Father's Revenge," asking Baldwin to take part in a scene in which Booth's character shoots him. During the scene, however, the lights go out and after the prop gun is replaced with a loaded gun, Baldwin is killed. When a threatening note is found in Baldwin's pocket, his murder is announced, and half a dozen people are suspected, including Captain Ward, the ship's steward, a gunman named Tony, Baldwin's jilted girl friend Gloria Palmer, and Booth himself. Haines takes charge of the investigation and learns that the deceased Baldwin was not Edward, but rather his twin brother, who had killed the real Edward before leaving the States. With the mystery of Edward Baldwin solved, Haines proposes to Jane.
An early title for this film was Go-Get-It Haines. Most of this film was shot over a year before its release on an ocean liner traveling between Los Angeles and Panama. According to an undated 1935 Hollywood Reporter news item, final touches were made at the Talisman studio. This film's plot was taken from copyright records and reviews, which do not clarify who murdered Edward Baldwin's brother on board the ocean liner.
