Dissipated New York artist Howard Marston decides to have one final fling before committing suicide in the park. Ruth Grahame, a toiling dressmaker, saves Howard and they marry. Howard gets a job in an engraving plant and paints Ruth's portrait. She dies of illness before its completion on the day that Howard receives a fortune for inventing a colormaking process. Disconsolate, Howard moves to Paris, where he meets the notorious cabaret singer Jeanne LaFleure, who resembles Ruth. Howard convinces Jeanne to pose for Ruth's portrait, and Ruth's sweet nature develops in Jeanne. She and Howard fall in love, but when Howard, feeling that he is betraying Ruth's memory, tells Jeanne that he loves her only because of the resemblance, she slashes the portrait and leaves. Howard then realizes that he loves Jeanne for herself. He finds her with her former suitor, Count Pascal de Fondras, who is forcing his affections on her. During a struggle, the count slashes Howard's eyes and jumps to his death. When Howard learns that he will be blind, he sends Jeanne away, but she returns, overjoyed that he now loves her.
