After several years of marriage, Julian's life with Edith has dulled his artistic inspiration, and he persuades her to take a menial position in order to finance his art studies abroad. Julian spends a year in Paris and returns home with bohemian attitudes and desires. He and Edith move into an artists' colony, and she soon realizes that his affection for her has waned. Edith's only consolations are her small daughter and her friendship with Greenough, who offers to marry her. Julian stands aside gladly, but he later recognizes his loss and paints a picture entitled "Realization," which wins him international acclaim. An accident to his daughter, Janet, brings Julian to her bedside in time to watch her die, after which he and Edith decide to start their life together anew.
