In April, 2014, the city of Flint , Michigan, under the leadership of an emergency manager appointed by the governor, switched to a water supply coming from the Flint River as a cost-saving measure. But the river water was corrosive and lead from the pipes leached into the drinking water. Soon thereafter, residents began to report issues with the water, such as discoloration, foul odor and rashes after use. State officials indicated that the water was safe for use but lead levels in the water were subsequently determined to be much higher than those considered safe.
