A former journalist and businessman who played character parts on the stage and screen during WWI, Schunzel directed his first film in 1919 and continued to helm and appear in numerous German productions until fleeing to Hollywood in 1938. When his directorial efforts met with little success, he concentrated solely on his acting career and appeared in films until the early 1950s when he returned to Germany.
