Biography

Charles Maxwell was a fixture of Western television shows throughout the 1950s and 1960s. He appeared in numerous guest-starring roles opposite A-list star Clint Eastwood on "Rawhide," which recounted the adventures of cowboys on a cattle drive. Maxwell also had several memorable turns, as a variety of characters, on the long-running Western "Gunsmoke," a popular show about Marshall Matt Dillon (played by James Arness) and his travails keeping the peace in Dodge City, which was a constant magnet for the most unruly frontier types. Maxwell's popularity in the Western genre even translated to his guest-starring role on an episode of the sci-fi series "Star Trek." In the episode, Maxwell played a replica of Virgil Earp (real-life older brother of famous 19th-century law enforcer Wyatt Earp) created by an alien race to face off against Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and his crew in a simulation of the famous gunfight at the OK Corral.
